Although the against-the-odds victory didn’t immediately lead to the Mexicans winning the war with the French, it helped build a rejuvenated resistance and Napoleon III announced that he would withdraw French troops from Mexico a few years later.
___
Since it is believed the French would have likely aided the Confederate States against the United States of America during the American Civil War, Mexico’s resistance likely changed the history of the United States.
___
Today, Cinco de Mayo is an official holiday in Puebla and is also widely celebrated across the US, where almost 60% of Americans will eat Mexican food, and a third will celebrate by drinking margaritas.
